In Sports mode, it runs the engine all the time, so the HEV battery can charge to something approaching 100%. Always good to do if you know you are going to leave the car for a while (>1 week). That way, even if the 12v battery is dead, you can get into the car and do the manual energy transfer (press the big button!!).

It's good that Hyundai have put a system in place to recover the decreased 12v battery capacity in their full hybrid Tucson when it appears dead. This should be pointed out to buyers and the recovery procedure explained at time of sale. I note that many other manufacturers hybrids and full EVs are also stricken with this apparently regular failure of their 12v systems, I am not aware of such a recovery rescue system in any of them, e.g.certainly not for friends Honda CRV hybrid breakdowns.
But follow this, it's raining hard all of a sudden, and her dental appt. is but 5 mins away by her Tucson. It was dead in the garage with 10 mins to go to that appt. She took my diesel, as not prepared to leave the Tucson abandoned and running in the street for the rest of the required 30 minutes whilst at the dentist. She has had it 2 and half years and wont have another full hybrid.

On the face of it this dealer is a disgrace to the profession. They should know that a dashcam fitted to this car should never be powered when the system is not on, if that is indeed the problem. When a customer has limited technical expertise, and why should they need it, then any responsible salesman/woman would spend time going through all the features of the car thoroughly, especially the unusual ones. Any call from a customer in trouble within a few weeks of buying a new vehicle should surely be given immediate attention rather than being fobbed off. Even on the phone a technician would probably have been able to help straight away.

Finally a new car should always be delivered with battery(s) in a well charged state and with a hybrid the car does not have to be clocking mileage merely left with engine in ready state for long enough. It is very possible that the electricians who fitted and tested the dashcam were not aware of the limited reserves of the 12 volt system and it left the showroom in a poor state of charge.

The battery gauge on the instrument cluster is showing the state of the high voltage traction battery. To my knowledge there is no display that shows the 12v battery state of charge.

Sport mode charges the traction battery more readily so that it is ready for maximum acceleration, assisting the engine.

This is documented in other posts, but before I park the car up for an extended period of time say > 2 weeks I tend to:

Put car in Sports mode and get the traction battery to the perceived max on the dash display. By doing this, I have at least given myself the best chance of preserving some charge which would subsequently be used to boost the 12V system if i needed to press the Battery Reset button. It's just one of a few 'Standard Operating Procedures' that I have for the Tucson HEV. So far, I haven’t needed to press Reset.

My car has a dashcam with park mode, but it's set to shutdown on sensing a low voltage I'm told. It was installed professionally so I don't have the voltages, but needless to say I've not had an issue.

Thanks to ‘jarvis’ and ‘DotDotDotDot’ for pointing out that what I see on the charge gauge is harvested power topping up the traction battery when in SPORT mode. Yes, that makes sense. I guess I have just been so used to seeing that gauge hover around the middle while in ECO mode, that I imagined that the 12v battery was being replenished although not needing much in ECO.

I can see the value in utilising SPORT mode on occasions, as others have said, in that if a non-entry situation should occur, the press-button transfer of power from the traction battery should permit a sensible start-up method once entry has been gained via the key.

Thankyou for the advice. I didnt realize you could change the settings on the dashcam. For now i have just unplugged it. Its garaed so nothing ‘bothers’ it at night as such, but guessing the fact that its ‘live” all the time might be sapping its power. I will try the sports mode technique too. Unfortunately I am not mechanically minded.
Indalo I am sorry to hear about your Covid, its well and truly floored me, I wish you a speedy recovery.
i understand the dashcam has not been wired to the ignition? Hence staying live all the time?
I have had the same car (lexus) for 17 years now, and although it has many gadgets, I havent had a dashcam before, so all this stuff is new to me.

Many thanks ’Tingly’ for your kind words. I hope you’re on the mend now. `Today, I had my best day since last Wednesday and I managed a long overdue shower which I had been reluctant to do for fear of falling over inside the shower stall. Painkillers are providing some shelter from the muscle aches and lumbago. I shall try to stay awake as long as possible this evening as I’d like to actually sleep through till dawn for a change when I hit the sack.

On the subject of dash cams, I had been using NextBase cameras for about 12 years and having only saved the rear camera from my previous camera, (completely forgot about the front one which I had hardwired myself in 2016) I did a spur-of-the moment thing when I was having a towbar & dedicated electrics fitted by a specialist auto-electrical company. I asked if they could fit a Next Base camera while they had my car for the towbar job. The owner/guy that answers the phone/electrician....whatever, said no, He then apologised, saying that they only fit high-end camera equipment and pointed me in the direction of their catalogue. The prices didn’t seem too unreasonable so I picked the Thinkware F790 model and the whole job was completed in about two hours and a very tidy job it was.

There is the facility to stop the ‘Parking Mode’ monitoring so I shall be checking that it is switched off properly when I next visit my car. I must mention that when I suffered two separate instances of hit-and-run damage to my previous car within weeks of each other, neither front nor rear camera captured anything at all and that was with both cameras set to medium sensitivity. The total cost was over £2K, the first incident Claimed under my insurance and the second, just a few weeks later, I paid for myself with no disclosure to my insurer.

I thought it was probably a smart move not to mention the second incident as I suspected that LV, the insurer, would substantially hike the premium with two reported claims. Come renewal time, they didn’t substantially increase the premium; they inflated it by around 140%!

I now insure with Aviva whose price was merely extortionate! When I was young and struggled on apprentice wages to keep a car on the road, everyone told me that insurance would become cheaper once I got into my 30s. It didn’t. They said once I got into middle age I’d find it cheaper. I didn’t. I remember throughout my 70s, the cost of a hire car was jacked up on account of my age. All through my 70s, hiring a car for holidays became increasingly expensive due to the loading applied to those called septuagenarians or octogenarians.

Hey-ho! As the boss of that major crime family, Captain Sir Tom Moore, frequently said, “Tomorrow will be a good day!"
