Deadlocks?

I have keyless entry and start and when I’m at work doing day shifts, I park my car in a large public car park. My previous vehicle was a Skoda Karoq with keyless entry and start. The Karoq allowed deactivation of the keyless entry and deadlocking of the vehicle. This was done by locking with the remote and then pressing the lock sensor on the door handle.

After that, you’d need to press the keyfob to unlock the car. I would not respond to keyless touch entry. With the number of thefts of vehicles where keyless systems are being exploited by duping or range extending the RF signal from the keys, this gave me some peace of mind.

My new Tucson Ultimate doesn’t seem to have the same functionality or if it does I’m at a loss on how to use it. In the owners manual there is a section on deadlocks but it is so brief and vague as to be useless. It says this on 5-17:

Deadlocks (if equipped)

Some vehicles are equipped with a deadlock system. Deadlocks prevent opening of a door from either inside or outside the vehicle once the deadlocks have been activated providing an additional measure of vehicle security.

To lock the vehicle using the deadlock function, the doors must be locked by using the remote key or smart key. To unlock the vehicle, the transmitter or smart key must be used again.

That’s it. I’ve tried using the key fob to lock the vehicle, walked away and approached the vehicle again, but I’m still able to unlock the vehicle my pressing the unlock button on the door handle, so it has not deadlocked the vehicle.

Anyone have any ideas? Am I just being stupid and missing something obvious?

My last car but one was a Kodiaq with keyless entry. So I know what you mean. Unless someone knows differently, the Tucson doesn't work the same way.
I'm not sure you're on the right track with deadlocks. On the Skoda, if you touched the door handle sensor within 5 seconds of pressing lock on the keyfob it deactivated the keyless entry, meaning the fob signal could not be read by some oik with a signal reader.
Depending on what year your Skoda was made, things have moved on and VAG cars were earlier here than Hyundai. If you lock your Tucson and then leave your keyfob for several minutes (sorry, I don't know the timescale), it will go to sleep and then cannot be read by an oik with an electronic reader.
If you keep your fob about your person so it never goes to sleep, then get a Faraday bag and keep the fob in that.

I don't think that's correct. I have a faraday box as I know of a couple of cases of new Tucsons locally being the victims of keyless car crime. Even after several hours the car recognises the key as soon as the box is opened.

The key fob transmits a signal which the car can read and that's how you can open the car using the small button on the doorhandle if you have the fob on your person. When the fob has lain dormant for several minutes, it stops transmitting the signal and you then cannot open the car using the button on the door. It then stands to reason that if no signal is being emitted it cannot be read by a thief with a reader. I don't have a reader so I cannot prove this, but i can assure you that the fob does go to sleep as I've tried it on my drive with the fob on a stool right next to the car and after several minutes the car would not open via the keyless entry method.
Of course your car recognizes your fob after several hours in a Faraday box, because you woke the fob up when getting it out of the box, so it then works normally again.
VAG introduced this system a while ago to combat keyless entry theft, but Hyundai were behind on this front and I was got the impression from my dealer that it was a recent addition and I don't know whether it was a function on the latest model Tucson when it was introduced. So how long ago were these new Tucsons stolen that you mentioned ?

Just to clarify, for test purposes, faraday box on a table beside the car in the garage. After several hours just opening the lid of the box without moving it car instantly responds. Both thefts within the past month.

Have you tested just leaving the key next to the car without the faraday box? When others have done this after 10 mins or so the key no longer transmits.

Sounds like either the faraday box opening is somehow activating the key or you have a fault somewhere.

You're missing the point here. Whilst using a Faraday box is not a bad idea, you do not need one if your car is very new. Try doing what Mar10 said and as I did , lock your car and then place your fob on a stool or some such right beside your car. Leave the fob completely undisturbed for a while (I left mine for 30 minutes because I was distracted by a neighbour) after which the fob went to sleep and I could not unlock my car using the little button on the door handle.
When the fob goes to sleep, it stops emitting a signal so there's nothing to to be read by a reader, so keyless theft isn't possible. The whole point of these latest fobs is to stop keyless theft and negate the need for Faraday bags.
That said. If you lay your fob somewhere in the house where it will constantly get moved by spouse, kids etc, then it will not go to sleep. Also, it won't go to sleep when it's on your person. So if you've just locked your car in a busy car park, then it might be possible for a pair of thieves to use a signal reader as you walk away. In this case, putting your fob straight into a Faraday bag would negate theft, but most people cannot be bothered with that, they just press lock on their fob and walk away without a backward glance.
Beware of Faraday bags, they should be tested regularly as they wear out and stop working.

More info on the two thefts you spoke of please. When were the cars manufactured, where were they parked, what time of day and what models of Tucson were they e.g. Premium, Ultimate etc ??

If this was the case could you fit a immobiliser to the car?
back in the day I had a white escort RS Turbo mk1 and I had a Clifford immobiliser and it a small dongle that just fitted to your key ring.
and the receiver was by the key lock so turn the key and off you go.

Waw if I just had that car now in a garage how much that would be worth

Immobilser will be the route I am going to go. Another cost though to get it done properly and a good one. Still for a car that's worth 37k then I consider it worth it.

Starline i96 or Ghost 2 are my top choices for this and I will go with one or the other but probably Starline.
