Hello folks. I've had a minor accident (no 3rd party-just a wall!) in my 6 mnth old Tucson resulting in minor damage to the tailgate and bumper. I'm undecided as to whether to claim on my insurance or pay for the repair myself. If I claim I'll lose some NCD but that's not the problem. I'm 73 yrs old and have medical issues as well so I'm more concerned about the ins co jacking up the premium by a large amount on renewal. If I go through the ins co is it likely to result in my having difficulty getting cover next year, either at a reasonable cost or indeed at any cost? Does anyone have any relevant experience that might be helpful?

Thanks

What a shame, it's always sad when your car gets damaged, especially a new one.
Moving on; Is your NCD not protected ? If it is, then you have no need to worry about losing it if you make a claim.
If you do make a claim, then your premium will definitely increase come renewal time.
If you make a claim and then change Ins companies at renewal time, having claimed for a minor repair with your current company shouldn't make a significant difference to the price offered, it happens all the time.
As all of our personal circumstances are different, it's not really possible for us to tell you what's best for you and your personal finances will play a part in your decision.
How minor is the damage ? For myself, I'd prefer to pay £200 to £300 and not involve the Ins company, but you really need to go to a couple of bodyshops and get some repair quotes so you can compare that cost with the projected cost and possibly hassle of using your Ins company.
Also, if the damage really is minor, it might well pay to contact companies like Chips Away, Dent Devils or similar, depending on who's in your area. These people specialise in small repairs and come to your house to do the repair., They are usually somewhat cheaper that professional bodyshops.
Might pay to post pictures of the damage to help others answer your question.

I’d say if repair is more than £500 make a claim! I had previous car written off, small amount of damage but Jeep was too expensive to repair said insurance company, so ordered a Tucson and was pleasantly surprised how cheap insurance was! I think Tucson is a low category though and I did have no claims protection.

Good advice by other posters, get a few quotes ,may not be as dear as you may expect. Your excess alone could probably cost close to the repair and Any excuse for your insurance company to put up future premiums is best to be avoided if possible.d
Let us know how you get on and good luck

Another thing to consider. If you claim, your insurance company will try and direct you down the road of using their preferred repairer who might not be who you would prefer to use. You can insist on who you use but the insurers will do their best to avoid that so stand your ground.

Good morning all and thanks for the replies. I've decided to pay for the repairs myself.
1 further question -part of the damage is to part of the rear bumper assemble which is the black "plastic" bit, like the wheel arch surrounds. The damage is no more than a bad scuff and the repairer says he can "retexture" it. Has anyone come across this before? The damage isn't that bad and I'm concerned that the "re-texturing" might be worse that the damage!

I personally have never heard of retexturing, but technology moves on apace and I don't doubt that what your man says is true.
Will he be able to match the current texture ? Don't know the answer to that, but it's a question you should ask before getting the work done. Hopefully the person you intend to use is reputable and good at his craft and if he doesn't get it right, then he should take steps to rectify it.
It might be that he has to retexture the whole panel rather than just patch it, but then, will what he does match the rest of the plastic on the car ?
These are questions you should ask before letting him loose on your expensive pride and joy.

I just searched "plastic bumper repair"on t'internet, and it's all in a video. It seems there's even a range of finishing coats to match what the rest of the car looks like, so shouldn't be a problem but I'll have a chat with the repairer anyway. You learn something every day!

Technically you still have to declare the incident to your insurer, even if no claim is made, but in reality they will never know.

I had a single vehicle incident a couple of years ago in my previous car, hit an animal in the dark (counts as my fault) and it made 0 difference to my premiums although my NCB was protected
I love my car, it's just a shame it was made by Hyundai

The lady across the road let her car run into mine it was all her fault and the insurance recovered the repair cost etc. 4 years later I found out that her running in to my car was costing me an extra £50+ per year for five years. Insurance companies do not tell you these things. If it's not too bad and it's only your car, have it done yourself.
